Samsung F250 (SGH-F250)

The Samsung F250 is a bit of an oddity - it looks expensive, but it isn't really. And it also comes with an unusual combination of features that means that it doesn't quite fit into a traditional product range.

Where it gets a little strange are the rest of the specifications - the 2 inch display is only 128x160 pixels, and the digital camera comes in at a so-so 1.3 megapixels. So in fact, what we have here is a phone with pretty good multimedia capabilities but one that cuts other features back to keep the price down. At around €190 or so SIM-free, the F250 costs roughly the same as the Nokia 6300 - but the Nokia 6300 has a much better display and camera.

Nokia N81

Remember the Nokia N-Gage? Nokia's original attempt at a gaming platform fell a bit flat in most (but not all) markets and largely sank without trace. But Nokia didn't give up on the idea of advanced mobile gaming, and now it's back with a vengeance on the Nokia N81 plus some other smartphone devices in the Nokia range.

So what exactly makes up the Nokia N81? Well, this is a 3G slider with a 2.4" 240 x 320 pixel display that works in landscape (wide) and portrait (tall) orientations. On the back is a 2 megapixel camera, and the N81 also has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity which can also be used for gaming. There's an FM radio too, and the N81 runs the Symbian S60 operating system, making it a capable smartphone.

It's quite a heavy phone at 140 grams in weight and 102 x 50 x 17.9mm in size. Talktime is up to 3 hours on 3G and 4 hours on GSM, with a maximum standby time of around 16 days. Alternatively, you can play music on it for up to 11.5 hours.

Nokia say that the N81 and N81 8GB should be available during Q4 2007 at an estimated cost before tax and subsidy of €430 / £290 for the N81 8GB and around €360 / £250 for the more basic N81.

LG enV VX9900

This phone is an excellent upgrade to the LG vx9800 (the "v"). Only 2/3 it's original thickness and almost half the weight. Now supporting Bluetooth file transfer and stereo headphones too!

I own the 9800 and the Envy 9900 and the biggest difference I saw was the interface is now black and blue, rather than orange and grey. Its sexy! This is what the "V" (vx9800) should have been. The menus are much faster. Taking pictures is a cake walk now, and not a fumbling mess like it used to be. The camera supports full auto focus too (like a regular digital camera).

I started hacking the phone on day 1 and noticed that it supports MP3 & WMA natively rather than just WMA. For video you can use Apple MPG4 (3gp with AAC audio) or XVID (with AAC or MP3 audio) at very high bitrates (1mbps video with 384kbps audio encode rate) Thats fast. Great! The phone plays back these formats without a hiccup. The camera lens now has a built in cover too that is opened up by twisting a ring around the lens. Audio quality is the same from built in speakers.

Overall I would recommend this phone.

This phone is very nice for a heavy texter. The full keyboard makes texting and typing very easy for anyone. The track ball does take a bit to get used to, but once you are used to it, it is super easy. The battery life isn't terrible, but it can be drained in a day. The screen size is very nice for viewing and taking pictures on the nice 2 MP camera that also has zoom. The other features such as planners and internet are also a very nice touch to any business person or techie. I thought $200 was very reasonable for this phone. (new AT&T contract and rebate needed for that price). But after looking at the iPhone, I feel that I came out with a better phone for my money.

Samsung BlackJack SGH i607
